Shifts: Nikki De Marco

Nikki De Marco

Reflecting on the past two years of personal and artistic transformation, this exhibition explores the shifts and motifs that have emerged since Nikki’s move to Norway in 2019. The presented works are a response to the local landscape and a reflection of her evolving relationship with it.

Dagsturhytta

“For me, understanding a place deeply is crucial before I can create art inspired by it. Without an emotional connection to the location, my work would lack depth. When I first encountered a dagsturhytte, I was deeply inspired by the seamless blend of nature and man. The cabins’ geometric lines were not only aesthetically pleasing but also uniquely integrated with the environment through their choice of materials. These structures didn’t pretend to be anything other than human-made, yet they coexisted with the natural surroundings in a way that felt harmonious.

Situated in the mountains, the cabins convey a dual sense of protection and vulnerability. They served as landmarks and points of reference, providing stability and a feeling of safety in the wilderness. At the same time, they reminded us of our dual role as individuals and as part of the collective natural world. The cabins stand as guides and protectors, emphasising our interconnectedness with the environment.”

Winter Night Running

“I have a passion for running in the snow at night. There is excitement through the uncertainty, vulnerability, and being alone. Shapes and forms dance around you as the headtorch moves through the dark. I became immersed in painting at the end of each night run, still with my headtorch which reduced aneed for perfection.”

Inner Landscapes

“These works are part of an exhibition of landscape paintings created over five months as a practical investigation for supporting the discovery of my authentic identity.

The work embodies the emotional landscape of my inner world and my fractured identity. Its intention is to reveal truthful moments of discovery and existence in an honest and authentic way through the focus on an intuitive approach and removing the barrier of a need for approval”.

Dreamscapes

“An emotional dance between figuration and abstraction, my artistic process has become increasingly intuitive, although at the core are subjects and colours that resonate with me on a deep, primal level. These instinctive choices are a testament to the idea that art is a conduit for the psyche’s expression. My current work explores the intricate connections between self, psyche, and the natural world, and the artwork presented mirrors the discourse of transformation, both metaphorically and physically”.
